Basic and Key Skills

Literacy and numeracy skills are essential ‘must haves’ demanded by employers, and all learners enrolled on a vocational course with us complete Basic or Key Skills in support of their programme.

Basic Skills involve literacy and numeracy support to enable learners to achieve the standard required for Key Skills.

The Key Skills are: Application of Number - how well learners can use their number skills. Communication - the ability to communicate both orally and in writing. IT - the ability to work with and use computers. Improving own Learning & Performance - the ability of a learner to review what they already know and plan what else they need to learn to improve their skills. Problem Solving - the ability to make decisions using information available. Working with Others - working as part of a team. Training Advisors will explain which Key Skills learners will need to achieve in order to complete their particular programme.

Kent Whitehouse gets involved with Growth Project!

Kent Whitehouse (our Animal Care Manager Sallyann Whitehouse's Great Dane) has been involved in 2 projects for Basic and Key Skills. Believe it or not Kent was the runt of his litter, so he provided a great opportunity for Basic Skills students to regularly track his height and weight and compare it to that of a regular size Great Dane. Kent was also involved in the Level 1 Key Skills Bone Growth and Development for Giant Dogs project. As you can see from the pictures below Kent grew considerably in 1 year!
